A Few Months in Business: Notes from Recruiting Under the Radar

The last couple of months have been a blast. I came back to Australia in October, not quite knowing what to expect, but with plans to launch my own recruitment business. I’d been out of the game for almost a year, but I was ready to dive back into it, solo!

I decided to go incognito (kind of), keeping a low profile. Instead of launching with a brand and all the fanfare on LinkedIn, I wanted to focus my energy on delivering an exceptional experience for my first few clients. A few months on, I’ve quietly slipped back into the market, and thanks to the support of my network, I’ve spent my time partnering closely with five amazing teams, helping them find new engineers and tech talent.

What I didn’t see coming when planning to launch my business was how deeply I’d get thrust into the world of DeFi, Blockchain, and Web3. I’m super proud to have already made placements with some incredible projects as they build their teams to achieve some brilliant things next year.

Some things I love about Web3, DeFi, and Blockchain:

  1. The passion. Everyone in this space is here because they believe in it. Not because it pays the bills, but because they genuinely see it as the future. It’s infectious and inspiring to be around people who feel that way about their work.
  2. It’s not easy. [Trigger warning] Crypto! A lot of people don’t fully understand it. It’s a word synonymous with risk. Understandably so, in a world of meme coins, who blames them? But there are also some very real projects adding immense value to the world. It’s a barrier to overcome. Many people in the space aren’t on linkedin, or using social media at all. It’s been fun to navigate this space. Oh, and did I mention - salaries in stablecoin? Haha - that’s a fun conversation.
  3. The value I can add. It reminds me of JavaScript back in 2016. Back then, ES6 was new, frameworks were popping up weekly, and no one had the mythical “3 years of React experience” because it had barely been around for one year. Web3 feels the same: fast-moving, dynamic, and fun. I feel like I am making a difference. Passionate people want a project to dive into, and amazing companies needing the talent. There’s space for a recruiter in this market. Shhh. Don’t tell anyone.

Next Year:

Thank you

To everyone who has supported me this year, those who've picked up the phone for a chat, given me advice, or referred me to people they know looking for work, or those looking to hire, thank you!

My role is all about community, and I am incredibly grateful for the support I've recieved in these first few months. Next year, I plan to keep giving back to the community through community events and a couple of other ideas I have.

There are still many people that I haven't had the chance to reconnect with yet, who I'm looking forward to catching up in the new year!

For now, I hope y'all enjoy a very well earned break and have a fantastic Christmas and Holiday season.

2025, here we come!
